About... Me.
Who am I?
I am Calum, I come from the West Coast of Scotland, today I live in Germany.
I have kept bees since 2007, I started of with 3 hives, and now manage about 40.
In 2009/10 I started mentoring young beekeepers, also instigating the beekeeping course in the local beekeeping club. Currently due to work and family commitments I usually only mentor 1 or 2 young beekeepers that didnt get a spot in the clubs training group.
Philosophy of beekeeping
Treat your bees well. Make sure they never want for feed. Make sure you keep them somewhere they are not stressed (afternoon shade, adequate forage, protection from the elements). Think before you act - a queen cell may not mean a swarm, it may be supercedure - take a moment to consider what the bees are motivated by.
Give them spave in the spring to expand their nest, and reduce it in winter. Take care they have enough space to store nectar. And Remember the wax is the foundation of the colony.
Disclaimer
I lose colonies to varroa, in a good year I will lose none. In a bad year I have lost 15%, that was my worst year. 5% is normal for me.
