Varroa Management
How many varroa do you see in the picture above? (anser below)There are 3 different types of varroa management
Biological treatments (brood removal, queen caging)Chemical (Formic acid, oxalic acid treatments
Quack treatments (these dont work - icing sugar rolls, accoustic varroa killer)
Varroa Management Guidelines:
Control of Varroa a guide for New Zealand Beekeepers - it covers the biology of varroa and most common treatment methodsDisclaimer
Biological treatments can be very effective, currently with my bee colony mite resistance levels it is not enough, I have to use chemical treatments. The treatments that are allowed to be used are generally nationally regulated. ONLY use what you are legally allowed to use. You are treating livestock as a vet would. You, your family and paying custmers will be consuming the produce of your livestock. Certain fat based treatments will leave residues in your beeswax, and mites will eventually build resistance to certain treatments.
